I’m not a huge fan of packing for a trip, but even worse is unpacking for an extended stay somewhere.
Last year, I became a convert to the packing cube system thanks to the always-charming Sonia Gil over at the Sonia’s Travels YouTube channel. Sonia’s episode on the benefits of the cubes led to likely one of my fastest purchase decisions ever.
This is why I love them:
- More suitcase room – The cubes provide slight compression of your packed items, which gives you more room in your case.
- Organization – As Sonia points out, for super efficiency you can organize by outfit or type of clothing. This actually makes packing easier and you’re less likely to forget an item because you’re building an outfit.
- More space in your hotel room – I hate living out of a suitcase and the amount of room it takes up in a small space. With this system, you can simply unpack the cubes into a dresser drawer and then store your case under your bed or tuck it away in a corner.
- Easy access – Instead of digging through your bag, you can instantly identify the cube you need on the road if you follow Sonia’s organizing system.
- Fewer wrinkles – Everything stays right where you put it in your suitcase. There’s no shifting or scrunching.
Steve was more than skeptical when I showed him the cubes, but after our first trip travelling together after I bought them, he was sold. The folder-style cube with the plastic folding guide is his favourite because it keeps his dress shirts crisp and ready to wear.
