The September before last, Steve was in the midst of an 8-week gig in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was coming home each weekend, which was pretty tiring for him. One of our survival tactics for long stretches away is to meet somewhere in the middle for a weekend. We decided to spend Labour Day long weekend in Miami. Turns out South Beach is the perfect spot for a hook up.

We stayed in the iconic South Beach area and had a total blast. We still talk about it. This is what made it a super getaway:

1. Our Airbnb Rental

Located in a stylish Art Deco building, this place was perfect. We loved the pool, which we had to ourselves one afternoon. It felt very decadent.

2. Art Deco

Before our visit, we didn’t know a whole lot about the Art Deco era of architecture. I found this fabulous Art Deco Walking and Cocktail Tour and not only was it informative; it was delicious! For $58 each (plus tipping), our very entertaining and knowledgeable tour guide, John Stevens, took our small group around to several hotels along Ocean Drive to learn the history of each building. At each stop we sampled a signature drink. What could be better than learning while sipping divine cocktails at the same time? True, some of the history of the buildings at the end of the tour remains a bit fuzzy for me.

3. Ocean Drive

Simply put, it’s a spectacle. This stretch along the ocean is crowded, hot, loud, and has the most outrageously dressed strollers imaginable. Then there’s The Palace Food Bar, which hosts a very entertaining outdoor drag show on Sundays just after sunset.

4. South Beach’s Try Anything Vibe

Let’s be clear, I don’t usually venture super far from my comfort zone, but Miami does bring out a certain adventurous spirit in a gal. I tried my first hookah bar and it was pretty cool, despite being a bit sketchy.

5. The Beach!

Obviously one of the best things about Miami is the beach. The water is warm, the beach trails along forever and the people watching is splendid. I loved the retro airplane banner advertising for local restaurants and bars that you can see over the ocean in the distance.

6. Miami has some Great Food

Two standout dining experiences were Tongue & Cheek and Indomania. We took advantage of Miami Spice, which runs annually during the months of August and September. Participating restaurants offer reasonably priced set menus so it’s a great low risk way to try out higher end spots.

Overall, Miami Beach is a sexy, fun hotspot that broke up a long work engagement with a needed dose of excitement.
