A super big thank-you to Jenni from the Just Chasing Rabbits blog, who has bestowed Tag Along Travel with a Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award! Jenni is from the American state I love to spell – Mississippi. She and husband Mark have travelled to and posted about some great hot destinations so if you’re looking for a tropical vacation, this is your info source. The honour comes with rules: You must answer 10 questions assigned by the person who has given you the award and you must then give the award to 10 other bloggers with 10 of your own questions.

Here are the questions Jenni asked me:

How long have you considered yourself a “traveller”?

I’ve loved travel since my very first glamorous trip (by car) from Winnipeg to Edmonton with my mom at age 10. I remember being super excited about seeing a new place.

My bigger adventures started when my husband Steve started to travel extensively for work. After tiring of dropping him off at the airport so often, I started to tag along as often as I could. That was about 10 years ago.

What is your funniest travel story?

Strangely, it was the time we were robbed late at night in Barcelona. Steve took off after the thieves leaving me alone on a deserted street. Not funny at the time, but in retrospect it’s a chuckler. You can read the full account here.

Why is travel important?

I’m not certain it’s important (or possible) for everyone, but travel makes me feel more connected to and appreciative of the world and other cultures. I do think it gives you a different perspective on life. Mind you, one can travel a lot and not experience very much. It depends on the kind of travel you do and what you’re open to.

What is the biggest lesson this world has taught you?

It’s a toss up. Travel has made me appreciate that I won life lottery by being born in Canada with the freedoms and standard of living it provides. Also, toilets are amazing in Japan and we should all aspire to that level of ingenuity.

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

That we could load a chip into our brains that would allow us all to speak every language in the world. I’m sure someone’s already working on that.

Couple or solo travel? Why?

I land in the middle because while I travel often with Steve I’m often solo at our destination for long periods of time. He’s at his work engagement; I work remotely at our hotel or apartment. I explore on my own quite a bit and I love the freedom and independence of it. On the other hand, it’s nice to have someone to share those experiences with at the end of the day and to explore together too. Tagging along on business is the best of both worlds.

What is one travel tip you’d tell to a fellow travelling sister (packing tip? safety tip?)?

For packing – invest in packing cubes. They will change your travelling life.

For safety – Don’t get drunk and pass out in a strange place or wander unfamiliar streets at 3 a.m.? Bet you didn’t think of that one!

More seriously: Try not to look like a tourist. Don’t appear bewildered and lost even when you are. Fake an air of confidence.

What one destination could you visit again and again without ever tiring of it? Why?

Probably the beautiful lake country in Manitoba and Northewest Ontario. It’s familiar, peaceful, and filled with nostalgic memories.

What is the one item you can never leave home without?

Big surprise—my iPhone! This is my absolute travel essential because it allows me to navigate new destinations. I am hopeless without it.

How has blogging been rewarding for you?

It’s given me an additional reason to join Steve on more of his business trips, which is good for our relationship because he travels for a week or more once or twice a month. It’s also helped me to reflect on the lifestyle we have. It’s pretty rare and comes with both perks and disadvantages. The older I get, the more I can ride out the disadvantages and focus on the perks.
